“全国高中数学联赛” 创办于1981年，是教育部批准，由中国科协主管，中国数学会主办的一项传统竞赛活动，联赛每年10月份举行，分为一试和二试，由各省、市、自治区数学竞赛组织机构轮流承办，至今已经举办了20多年。
现在全国每年都有1200名左右的同学取得“全国高中数学联赛”省级赛区一等奖，其中200多名同学应邀参加每年的“中国数学奥林匹克（全国中学生数学冬令营）”。冬令营中分数最高的30名左右选手组成参加当年国际数学奥林匹克的中国国家集训队。
全国高中数学联赛（一试）所涉及的知识范围不超出教育部2000年《全日制普通高级中学数学教学大纲》中所规定的教学要求和内容，但在方法的要求上有所提高。
全国高中数学联赛加试（二试）与国际数学奥林匹克接轨，在知识方面有所扩展；适当增加了一些教学大纲之外的内容。
目前试卷的结构及题型、分值搭配等是：
一试考试时间为8：00—9：20，共80分钟，包括8道填空题（每题8分）和3道解答题（分别为16分、20分、20分），满分120分。
二试考试时间为9：40—12：10，共150分钟，包括4道解答题，涉及平面几何、代数、数论、组合四个方面。前两题每题40分，后两题每题50分，满分180分。
